Wander on, big fuzz-ball...

"THERE'S A BEAR IN THE YARD AND THE POLICE ARE OUTSIDE!"

Well, it was Park Rangers not Police, but there really was a bear in the yard.

Our back yard is fenced. Carol will
take a few laps every day in good
weather.
She did that today and then sat on
the front porch for a bit when
all of a sudden she came screaming
into the living room exclaiming the
the first line in this post.

Ann and I were reading/ watching
baseball and reacted with more than minimal confusion...
"WTF are you talking about??".
We all scrambled for window views and,
sure enough, there was a black bear in the
back yard. He stood about three feet at the
shoulder. Plenty big enough to be intimidating.
He seemed confused, too, looking
for an exit in the fence.

Both gates were closed so the only way for
him to get in or out of the yard was to scale the fence.
I don't think bears are known for leaping.

We turned away long enough to look for the Rangers parked
in the street out front and in that moment, the bear was gone.

The Rangers disappeared down a side street and all was quiet
here again. Except, the neighbors are seen once in a while
peering cautiously through windows or doors before venturing
out into the wild.

A bit jealous, for what it is worth. A mountain lion, but I didn't see, only heard. I have been trying to see a bear... preferably black bear... if too preferably out there, not in my yard. Is that the first bear you have seen, outside of a zoo? Enjoy the experience. I don't think you can do much about bears though.

Do you live anywhere near a wildlife area? I thought you were safely in burbsville, or a less shooty city. Then again, that was just a guess, or hope.

We live in Akron city limits. About a mile from a large city park.
First time seeing a bear anywhere. We read every year in the local paper about young black bears being sighted in towns across northeast Ohio this time of year. They travel from Pa. westward looking for new territory. They've been seen in towns 10-20 miles north of here but never in Akron that I know of. Will be curious to read the Akron Beacon Journal tomorrow morning to see what is reported.
Very common to see deer travel through the area any time of the year and I've heard of cougars/mountain lions sometimes in farther, smaller cities.

Supposedly black bears aren't considered too aggressive toward people unless cornered. I will not test that assumption.

Akron? That is where the man I call father, and his family is from. They were from the 'wrong side of the tracks', if I don't know more than that, and that was back before WWII. Westfalls... if you happen to have heard the name. An uncle still lived there, if he must have passed by now, or be in care at the very least.

I know very little about Akron. It used to be industrial? Of middling size? Anyway...

My father married a woman from the right side of the tracks, to much fuss in their day. Oh the bothers...

As to the bear... fear generating or not, I am glad you ladies were able to see such a creature. I really am jealous.

He was just looking for a pic-a-nic basket and his friend Boo Boo.

It would be great see such a magnificent creature. Through 5he window.

Yeah, Joe. Through the window was just fine. I hope he found Boo Boo.

Doom, sorry, Westfall isn't a familiar name to us.
Akron was known, for many years, for manufacturing tires(Goodyear, Goodrich, General, Mohawk, etc.)among many other types of manufacturing. Tire companies started moving their work out of the country in the 1980s. The city never fully recovered.
