Chocolate milk on Friday...

When I was in grade school, we had one choice for
our beverage during lunch. Milk.
White milk in a glass bottle with a cardboard disk
pressed into the neck of the bottle to seal it.
The seal had a half-moon perforation that had to be
pried up in order to insert the paper straw in the bottle.

When I was in first grade the milk cost 2 cents a day.
A dime for the week.
By the time I got to eighth grade (this was before Junior High
and Middle School were invented) the milk cost 5 cents a day.
Highway robbery, wouldn't you say?

Friday lunch was always special because we had two choices
that day. Plain old white milk or CHOCOLATE milk.
Need I say which one was the choice for most of us?

The food they served in the cafeteria on Friday was different, too.
This was a public school but, they didn't serve meat on Friday.
This made Mom happy because she raised us Catholic and, back
then, Catholics didn't eat meat on Friday. Ever.

So, one Friday we might get a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl
of tomato soup. Another Friday might be tuna casserole or a
tuna salad sandwich. Dessert was usually fruit or pudding.

To this day, if I get a craving for any of those foods listed above,
I automatically think of chocolate milk.
Today, in the grocery store, I decided I wanted the fixins for a
good tuna salad tomorrow. Friday. I also made sure to grab a
bottle of chocolate milk. Plastic bottle, unfortunately. Oh, well.

I think I remember Thursday was spaghetti day.

I am a Lynx...

So sayeth this quiz on BlogThings which I found
at Tammi's this morning.

To quote the quiz:

"You Are a Lynx
You are a quiet observer of the world around you. Your wisdom comes from listening carefully.
You've always been extra sensitive and aware. And it's made it difficult for you to fit in.

You see past people's outward personas. You are able to penetrate a stranger's soul.
What you've learned about people is both beautiful and ugly. And you keep these secrets to yourself."

Well, now.

Understand that I don't often put much nevermind in
these kinds of things but, this made me take a deep breath.

The only thing I see that I can dispute, just a bit, is the
very last line. Because I write. I write what I know and feel and see.
However, I am, indeed, one who keeps confidences.
People trust me. Of that, I take much pride.

Science Fiction Engineering?...

Doing some blog browsing the other day, I came
across this place:
Gravity Well.

I'm not a big fan of science fiction, usually, but
this writer has a way of keeping my attention.
Worth a look. Also added it to my sidebar.

Enjoy.

She stopped struggling... (continued)

He lifted her skirt.

"Oh my pretty girl." he whispered.
"You wore the garter belt I like so much."

He almost regretted killing her quite yet.

~~~~~
Married five years. They both wanted children.
Or, so he thought.
Her first mistake was leaving the birth control pills in her
lingerie drawer. With a bracelet he'd never seen before.
People get careless when their deceit goes on too long.
That was six months ago and he'd been collecting evidence
and plotting ever since. His original plan did not include killing.
He wanted to catch her in the act, beat the shit out of whichever
prick was there and, spend some months making her life miserable.
In the end, though, the idea of long, drawn out drama was not
appealing. Better to end it quickly and move on.
When his job necessitated traveling, he called her every
morning and she called him every evening.
Turned out that schedule left her evenings free for other things.
When he saw this week's schedule had him working two separate
projects, he decided it would be the best scenario for covering
his tracks. He wasn't due to come home for two more days.
That would explain why the vase of roses was still on the dresser
with a card that said, "Can't wait to see you tomorrow. Love, Joe."
The dead, naked guy beside her on the bed was Sam.
Sam's neck was twisted in a most unnatural angle. As was hers.
No blood. No mess.
He reached up to close her eyes and pull her skirt down a bit.
He couldn't help but leave her, his wife, with a tiny bit of dignity.
Living in a heavily treed area with distant neighbors made it easy
to hide his car and walk unnoticed to the house. With several
hours of moonless dark still in the evening, he'd have no trouble
going back the way he came. He'd be back at the hotel in plenty
of time to make his morning call to her. And leave a loving message.
Perhaps Joe, the bouquet-guy, would be the one to find this scene.
If not, he'd make another call tomorrow night, leave another
message and then call her sister to ask if she'd seen his wife.
Either way, he would be the broken-hearted, grieving husband
however he got the tragic news.
He walked to the bedroom doorway and looked back to say,
"It was fun while it lasted, wasn't it?"
Let's do something for others...
Old Blue over at Bill and Bob's Excellent Afghan Adventure
has come across some disturbing information about our
soldiers serving in Afghanistan. They are being charged
exorbitant prices for internet access to family and friends.
Click on the link above to get the whole story and let those
in charge know this can't wash!
Then go visit Vampire06 at Afghanistan Shrugged to get a
current report on what our soldiers are doing over there.
Scroll down a bit because he posted a great big Thank You
from his Team for all that has been sent to them from us.
Leave comments, please. It means a lot to them to hear from us.
Strange weather lately and I have a purple toe...
Most of last week our temps were in the upper 80s.
Today it is 50-something and the next few nights are
predicted to be in the low 40s.
Don't take this as a complaint. Really.
The sun is shining, the sky is a beautiful, clear blue and
the Spring Break crowd is almost gone. What's not to like?
Unemployment benefits got beefed up by $25 a week.
That's good because the job market sucks worse all the time.
The company that laid me off in December had another
lay-off in February, the remaining employees are still working
only 32 hours a week and management is now trying to decide
if it would be better for them to shut down completely for the
month of June or go to 24 hour work weeks.
(That was a very long sentence.)
I applied for a job that I think would be very cool.
No response yet from the employer. I will be persistent.
I have no idea why my toe is purple.
I didn't stub it. It is not swollen but it is slightly ache-y.
Go ahead, you can admit it... you're drooling over my exciting life.
Forest or trees?...
one is starved.
worshipping tidbits offered.
another tolerates, mostly.
accepting what suits
at the time.
lines drawn for one
by another.
both justify themselves
to themselves.
truth carefully ignored.
for now.
