Merry Christmas to me...

I've been looking for a nice copy of this cookbook
for almost 40 years. Finally found it on line, ironically
enough, through a bookstore in Deland, FL. I lived 20 miles
from there for 38 years and never knew it existed.

My mother-in-law had a copy of the original 1928
edition and loaned it to me. I fell in love with it and
hoped she'd forget she gave it to me, but after several
months she nicely asked for it back so she could give it to
her daughter.

And thus, my quest began.

What I finally found a few weeks ago is the expanded edition
from 1941. It's bigger and also wonderful.
The original was so popular that they added many more
recipes and printed and sold thousands and thousands of copies.

The original.

 Please go to the link.
Her story is amazing.

 This is the edition
I bought but mine
is in much better
condition.

I'd still like to find a copy of the original...just because.

 August 9, 1997

A couple of the neighbors found his body sitting back
on the couch in the living room. He'd put a shotgun to
his forehead and somehow pulled the trigger.

...I kept hesitating to bring this up again. And, really,
I wouldn't have thought about it if I hadn't come across
his photo by accident. Seems that it's going to nag at me
until I just put it to bed one more time.

If anyone is interested in the ugly details, then look to
the right and click on the Blog Archives for 2007. Scroll all the
way down to May 29, 2007 "It's All About Choices - Epilogue".

This is him, sitting in Capt. Tony's Saloon in Key West:

They preach about
"forgive and forget".
I mostly have the "forget"
part down pat.
"Forgive" not so much.

The Chief Parrothead is gone...

I've been to Key West a gazillion times. One of the best
Jimmy Buffett concerts (out of half a dozen I attended)
was held outdoors on the local football field in 1987.
Too many fond memories to list will just make me cry
as I mourn the death of Jimmy Buffett at the age of 76.

He made a lot of music. More photos here.

There has never been a left-handed catcher...

I was really hoping you would read the poem
beneath this post. I know it's loooonnngg.
But it's also goooooddd. Very good.
I didn't write it so don't worry about being
a critic. No one's going to hurt my feelings.

Go ahead. Please. I bet you like it.

Need to read this at least twice for full impact...

I hope you get old.
I hope time is heavy on your bones, draped over you like an embrace from God.
I hope the backs of your hands become deep maps—
Of all the places you have been.
Dark stains where your fingers dipped into clay and dirt and mud.
I hope you get old.
I hope time fills your heart with joy and triumph.
I hope you have enough obstacles to teach you character and empathy and enough challenges to bestow you with uniqueness.
I hope pain shows you how strong you are and the value of a true friend.
I hope you’ve been alone enough to know yourself.
I hope you find quiet more than you find chaos.
I hope you get old.
That time wraps around your legs like a desperate lover.
I hope you can look into the faces of people you have loved and cherished and that you leave behind echos of grief,
Because you were loved in turn.
I hope you give thanks for every waking moment,
For what you have and for what you have not.
I hope you get old.
I hope you make things that last.
I hope you’ve inspired people.
I hope you’ve helped someone.
I hope grace rests at your feet.
I hope.
You forgive everything,
You did.
Not
Get
Quite.
Right.

I have a Baseball question...

If the batter hits a pop-up or a fly ball,
and makes it to first base before the
ball is caught, why isn't he safe?

Anyone? Bueler? Joe? MLB?
